Lab-grown diamonds, explained.
Most Carated pieces are set with lab-grown diamonds. Here’s what that means, and why we chose them.
ARE LAB-GROWN DIAMONDS REAL DIAMONDS?
Yes. A lab-grown diamond is pure crystallised carbon, exactly like a mined one. It has the same hardness, the same brilliance and the same fire.
It is not a simulant such as cubic zirconia or moissanite, which only look similar.
HOW ARE THEY MADE?
A small diamond seed is placed in a chamber that recreates the heat and pressure in which diamonds form naturally.
Over several weeks, carbon builds on the seed, layer by layer, until a rough diamond has grown. It is then cut and polished like any other.
HOW ARE THEY GRADED?
The same way as mined diamonds: on cut, colour, clarity and carat.
Our centre diamonds are independently graded and come with their grading certificate. The certificate always states that the stone is lab-grown.
CAN ANYONE TELL THE DIFFERENCE?
Not by looking. Telling a lab-grown diamond from a mined one takes specialist laboratory equipment.
WHY DOES CARATED USE THEM?
Freedom. Lab-grown diamonds let us offer bolder stones and higher grades at a given budget, so the piece you want is more often the piece you can have.
